Network marketing continues to suffer a PR backlash.\u00a0\u2018Don\u2019t go there\u2019, say some.\u00a0\u2018Yes, we know all about it, it\u2019s a pyramid scheme,\u2019 say others.\u00a0Few realise, however, that it\u2019s considered as a serious career path in many in countries from Germany to Japan, where the stigma simply doesn\u2019t exist.

\nThe problem is we\u2019ve attracted the wrong people to network marketing for decades:\u00a0the desperate, needy, bored and non-committal.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What if\u00a0tomorrow\u2019s\u00a0network marketing millionaires were the talented, motivated, entrepreneurial personalities stuck in management or director level jobs?<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how to find out if you\u2019re one of them:<\/h3>\n

1.\u00a0Deconstructing the pyramid\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The first thing people do when they don\u2019t understand network marketing is that they write it off as a \u2018pyramid scheme\u2019.\u00a0Ask them what that actually means and few come up with a valid explanation.<\/p>\n

The irony though is that a corporate hierarchy is positioned more in the style of a pyramid.<\/p>\n

You have the MD at the top who earns the most, the senior director team, then managers and then support staff below them. All earn salaries in a downward spiral. There is no residual income should you stop working for a period of time.<\/p>\n

Network marketing on the other hand, is simply and purely a means of distribution.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

You\u2019re using your existing and growing network to promote and distribute a company\u2019s products.\u00a0Network marketing companies spend no money on traditional advertising and distribution, and this is how they\u2019re able to share a greater portion of their sales revenues with their distributors.<\/p>\n

There is residual income when you have built a team.\u00a0Part of the taboo is that people treat network marketing products with skepticism because they don\u2019t have exposure that advertised products do.<\/p>\n

However, have you ever bought a product which has been recommended to you?\u00a0Sure you have!<\/p>\n

This is the entire premise of network marketing.<\/p>\n

Think of it as \u2018direct to consumer\u2019 \u2013 a fresh approach in an age of ever-increasing online shopping and a shrinking high street.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0What about franchising or starting up on your own?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

What are the alternative routes to entrepreneurship?\u00a0Franchising seems like a tried and tested route, but what if you haven\u2019t got between $12,242 USD – $2,448,460 USD\u00a0cash to start off with to pay the franchise fee?<\/p>\n

And would you earn money if you stopped actively selling?\u00a0And then there\u2019s starting up alone.<\/p>\n

You need an idea, business plan, funding, marketing and it\u2019s all in unchartered territory.\u00a0I completely encourage and applaud those who take the start-up leap of faith, but there\u2019s an important gap that network marketing fills to entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n

More than three quarters of people who start a career in network marketing start part time.\u00a0This gives them the confidence to eventually take the plunge and leave their full time job.<\/p>\n

The investment in time need only be spent on improving sales skills and building your network \u2013 everything else is taken care of.<\/p>\n

The average cost to gain your first set of products starts at anything from $183\u00a0to $1,836 on average.\u00a0Outlay is minimal, as is the risk.<\/p>\n

With revenues of nearly $200 billion across the globe the best advice is to start by researching a network marketing company whose products and proposition most appeal to you.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0The only prerequisite:\u00a0the right qualities<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The first mistake of those entering network marketing is thinking you should start selling to and \u2018sponsoring\u2019 friends and family, because they\u2019re easy to talk to.<\/p>\n

This is a recipe for disaster. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The only thing you need to look for in others are the right qualities.<\/p>\n

Who do you know across your network that\u2019s sales-driven, self-starting, excellent at networking, fearless, tenacious and hard working?<\/p>\n

In life, you can request things of people if you have a valid reason for asking. Trying to sell something to the wrong person shows limited consideration for their \u2018fit\u2019 to the situation.<\/p>\n

That will also leave you with a bad taste in your mouth for network marketing.<\/p>\n

Finding someone you know across your network whom you know well, or vaguely, but who has these qualities is a relevant and valid reason to ask them about their career aspirations, and whether they might be interested in forming part of your network, while growing their own.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Untrapping the intrapreneur<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It\u2019s time we had an honest debate about network marketing.\u00a0Sometimes the industry lets itself down with badly presented get rich quick-style propositions, but that\u2019s not how it\u2019s meant to be.<\/p>\n

For all those unsavoury propositions there is a growing raft of dynamic companies selling high quality products with expanding global networks.<\/p>\n

Over the past year, network marketing grew 10 per cent in the UK, though we\u2019re still behind Germany where the market is three times bigger.\u00a0There, it\u2019s seen as a credible alternative route to entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n

Across UK plc we have too many driven, talented, highly motivated individuals stuck in managerial or director jobs that want something more.\u00a0Their salary potential is limited, office politics will never cease and starting on their own, without the right support, puts a dampener on the dream.<\/p>\n

When the CIPD last surveyed 500 entrepreneurs\u00a0who set up their own businesses, key concerns that were uncovered were the challenging economic climate (65%), working long hours (54%), managing financial issues (52%) and a general lack of funding (52%).\u00a0Network marketing offers a route to profitable entrepreneurship which bypasses all of these limitations.<\/p>\n

We just need to attract the right people and change our perceptions about an industry geared to make millionaires. Having grown 10 per cent in the past year, revenues from network marketing across the UK stand at nearly $3.1 billion USD.<\/p>\n
